It was an early Saturday morning when a knock came from the front door. I wasn’t expecting anyone so I didn’t answer but peaked out the window. It was a man dressed in a jean shirt with jeans on and a white unmarked truck parked on the street. In one hand was a clipboard and the other was a utility meter. He went around to the back yard and the power was turned off briefly while he installed the meter. A flyer was placed on the door knob and it gave information about this new meter called a “Smart Meter” which had glasses on it. The flyer had some information and I thought to myself maybe this will save some money on the next utility bill. No more thoughts about it and I went on with the day. Returning home late that evening I was exhausted and went to sleep around 11PM. I typically am asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow and sleep all the way through the night, but this night was different as I woke up instantly as if I drank a pot of coffee. It was strange because it was still dark and when I got up to head to the kitchen I noticed the clock on the stove say 3:12am it surprised me. What was more surprising was that I felt energy almost like an adrenaline dump, but how was this possible with just 4 hours of sleep? I went back into the bedroom and tried to go back to sleep but tossed and turned for a couple of hours until finally falling back to sleep around 7:30am. Today is now Sunday and it’s business as usual, out of the house and down the road. I’m a little tired but no big deal. I go home and fall asleep around 11pm. Again, I wake up wide awake instantly at 3:12am. This was very strange as I had never in my life experienced this type of disruption. My mind is racing and my curiosity is stimulated as I walk out to the living room and sit on the couch. It was dark but the white Smart Meter pamphlet caught my eye and I thought to myself could this be why I am waking up? No way, that would be thinking crazy. One of my hobbies was buying and selling audio equipment and old BMX bikes. When looking up something new to me a search of the product name along with the term “problems” was a way to cut to the chase whether to waste time and money on it. So of course what did I do? Typed in the search bar “smart meter sleep problems” and low and behold I couldn’t believe my eyes. There were others that were having problems with sleep. One website called stopsmartmeters.org was a treasure trove of information as people would comment and leave links. One of them was to a website filled with documents from the US Military. There was a Defense Intelligence Agency paper that stated “If the more advanced nations of the west were stringent with exposure standards there would be unfavorable effects on industrial output and military functions.” One from NASA and another from the US Naval Medical Research Institute with five pages of symptoms referencing thousands of papers. It all looked legit. I now have been up since 3:12am reading about how smart meters were destroying people’s health and looking at official documents from the US Government with a common symptom of insomnia. They mentioned that it starts out as a sleep issue and then slowly other severe health issues will arise over time. It’s now Monday morning and first thing I’m on the phone with the electric company. The call went something like this. (Me)“Can you change out my smart meter for the one that was on the house on Friday? (utility) No, these are the new meters and they cannot be changed back to the old style meter. Why do you want to change it back? (Me) Because it’s waking me up at 3:12am and there are others having the same problem on the internet. (utility) chuckle, we can have someone out to see if it’s making a noise and check if everything is alright. (me) Alright, well have them come out at 3am because that’s when the problem occurs. (utility) I’m sorry but we can’t do that and we aren’t changing your meter. I thought to myself what the heck is going on? Something can be placed on your home that is causing sleep issues and the utility won’t remove it? It does sound a little crazy after all. Maybe they will stop, if I share the information with them I just found? And this was where it started. Unknowingly it would turn out as a fight for my life.
