Electrohypersensitivity beyond controversies
Abstract
We thank Dr Cinciripini for his comment on our recently published article entitled “One or many environmental intolerance(s)? A cluster analysis over two representative samples” and the opportunity to further discuss the important issue of dualistic stances on symptoms associated with environmental factors (SAEF). Electrohypersensitivity or symptoms associated with electromagnetic fields (SAEF-EMF) have historically fostered discussions featuring opposing “biotoxicological” and “psychological” views. We wish to argue that these controversies should now be overcome, as a biopsychosocial approach can account for all facets of SAEF-EMF and other types of SAEF. Researchers and clinicians should therefore reconcile and share the endeavor to open new avenues for dedicated treatment.

Main findings
This is a comment or discussion piece arguing that controversies between biotoxicological and psychological views of electrohypersensitivity/SAEF-EMF should be overcome. The authors propose a biopsychosocial approach to account for SAEF-EMF and related symptoms and to guide treatment avenues.
Outcomes measured
- electrohypersensitivity
- symptoms associated with electromagnetic fields
- symptoms associated with environmental factors
Limitations
- No empirical exposure or outcome data are reported in the abstract.
- No sample size or population is described.
- The abstract presents an argument rather than original study findings.
