Studies on the interaction of microwave radiation with cholinesterase.

PAPER pubmed Radiation and environmental biophysics 1978 Other Effect: no_effect Evidence: Insufficient

Abstract

The significance of the enzyme cholinesterase in studies on the biological effects of microwaves is discussed. Experiments were performed on the direct effect of microwave radiation on the enzyme activity in aqueous solution, and in rabbit blood. Microwave radiation was found to have an effect only when the temperature increase was great enough to denature the enzyme.

Main findings

Microwave radiation affected cholinesterase activity only when the temperature increase was sufficient to denature the enzyme. No direct (non-thermal) effect is described in the abstract.

Outcomes measured

  • Cholinesterase enzyme activity
  • Enzyme denaturation (temperature-related)

Limitations

  • Frequency and exposure metrics (e.g., SAR) not reported in the abstract
  • Exposure duration not reported
  • Sample size not reported
  • Details of experimental conditions and controls not provided in the abstract
